Una simple pregunta; a simple question

¿Porqué los Estados Unidos de América se llaman a sí mismos América y no como se llaman, Estados Unidos? Podrían los restantes países latinoamericanos llamarse América también? ¿Alguien puede ilustrame / ilustranos al respecto?
Why does the United States calles itself America, and not as they are really called, United States? Could the other latin-american countries called themselves America as well? Would someone ilustrate me / us on this subject?
